If you have COVID-19 and are more likely to develop severe illness, there are treatments available that can reduce your chances of being hospitalized or dying from the disease. The medications available to treat COVID-19 must be prescribed by a health care provider and started as soon as possible after you are diagnosed to work effectively. If you test positive for COVID-19, contact a health care provider right away to determine if you are eligible for treatment, even if your symptoms are mild right now.

It is important that treatment is started within days of when you first develop symptoms.

People who are more at risk for getting very sick include older adults, people who are unvaccinated, and people with certain medical conditions such as chronic lung disease, heart disease and weakened immune systems. Vaccinated people, especially those ages 65 years or older or who have other risk factors for severe disease, may benefit from treatment. A health care provider will help you decide if a treatment option may be right for you.
